Researchers in the U.S. have built a simulation model that explains why the Karakoram glaciers in Asia are not melting, unlike other parts of the world. The model shows that the Karakoram receives most of its precipitation in the winter, resulting in more snow and continued growth of the glaciers. The researchers gathered weather data dating back to 1861 on three major parts of the Himalaya chain to create a finer map of the area and ran simulations representing weather patterns up to 2100.
